Tank Tops and Dreams

My favorite tank top has a phrase written on the front: Do What You Love.  When I wear it, I ask myself, are you following your passion?

Following your passion is like marrying “the one” or picking the perfect name for your child – when it’s right, you’ll just know.  The correct path is so clear, you can’t miss it.

But following your passion isn’t easy.  It takes guts.  It takes perseverance.  It takes resilience.  Sometimes simply identifying your passion is a struggle.  Most of us aren’t born with it – we have to stumble down the path until we find it.  Sometimes we find it, let it go, and rediscover it.  But we must be forgiving of ourselves.  It’s all about the journey, right?

Here’s a poem to warn us of the dangers of neglecting our passions:

By Langston Hughes

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

Maybe I’ll have it printed on a tank top.  I’ll wear it on the days I’m fresh out of guts, perseverence and resilience.
